The allure of world-class skiing at Winter Park Ski Resort naturally draws avid skiers and boarders to this mountain resort – primarily for a vacation or “live and work” experience. For many who fall in love with the place, they make it their home. But it’s only when summer comes around that the full beauty of the valley comes into its own and with it a bewildering array of outdoor activities, one of which is golf. Golf in the Colorado Mountains is truly a gift of nature, and at Pole Creek Golf Course, just outside of Winter Park, there is no better experience. Just a 75-minute drive from Denver, Pole Creek Golf Course not only has a challenging layout, but at 8,600 feet above sea level, the ball flies 15% farther. A better game and scenery too - this is a golfer’s dream. Pole Creek Golf Course offers tree-lined, links-style holes with breathtaking views of the Continental Divide. One of the highest 27-hole courses in North America, Golf Digest rated this 10,709-yards, Par 108 course "Best New Golf Course in America" in 1985 and "Number One Place to Play in Colorado". It was also awarded the Top Golf Course in the Rocky Mountains for 2006/2007 by the Zagat Survey. The original 18 holes comprise The Meadow and The Ranch which have been expertly crafted around the creek that runs through the center of the course. Lakes and water hazards aside, there is a nice flow to this course, with every hole serving up its own unique challenge. The Ridge 9 was added in 1999 and has its own unique complexion also. The elevation gain on the first hole – a dogleg par 4 where only the top of the flag is visible with your approach shot – is in my opinion the hardest hole on the course. This is countered by the par 5 finishing hole – all downhill and reachable in two – and where the tee-box provides one of the most glorious views in the County. Due to the intensity and length of the winter here, the course is only open from the end of May through early October, so it really does feel like a treat when you get to play. Rates start at $48.00 for 18 holes twilight and max out at $99.00 for weekend play, including cart – a great value when comparing other resort courses. Further, you couldn’t meet a friendlier bunch of staff at the course – all are avid golfers and share in the desire of making this course the best possible experience for locals and visitors alike.
