Freddy Couples might just be the greatest Champion 2 Years, 2 Months ago Karma: 1
The whole idea of the Champions Tour was to give old codgers, and their equally graying fans, a chance to see their heroes in action one last time, to rage with 9-irons aloft against the dying of the light. Nobody anticipated that somebody would come onto the Champions Tour still in possession of PGA Tour-worthy skills.

Somebody has, and it's getting ugly. In a good way.

On Sunday, Fred Couples won his second straight Champions tournament, the Toshiba Classic. And in the only other tournament he's played, he finished second. First, first, second. Yep, that's a fairly convincing throttling of the field.

Oh, but there's more. Couples currently ranks first on the Champions Tour in driving distance, eagles, scoring average, money and overall ranking, and second in putts per round, par breakers, sand saves, birdie average, putting average, and greens in regulation. That, friends, is utter domination.

Yes, it's three tournaments in. But Couples has the game and the mental makeup to be the best Champions player ever. At age 50, he's a young phenom again.

But he'd better enjoy it while it lasts. Kenny Perry is Champions-eligible this year, and it won't be long before Vijay Singh is too. And then the oldsters will need to start a Senior Champions Tour to get away from these pesky kids.
